Glossary
Use this glossary when platform terms, WhatsApp terms, and Meta terms overlap.
Account
Your account is the user login you use to access rather.chat. One account can belong to one or more company workspaces.
Agent
An agent is a team member who primarily works in Chats. Agents can usually view and respond to conversations, depending on company workspace permissions.
Authentication template
An authentication template is a WhatsApp template used for identity verification, login codes, and account access messages.
Bot
A bot is an automated conversation experience that guides users through predefined steps.
Bot flow
A bot flow is a sequence of steps inside an automated WhatsApp conversation. Each step can ask a question, show options, collect information, or route the user to another step. More info
Broadcast
A broadcast is a bulk message send that uses an approved WhatsApp template to reach many users at once. More info
Carousel template
A carousel template is a marketing template with multiple swipeable media cards. Use it for products, packages, listings, or other visual choices. More info
Channel
A channel is a connected WhatsApp phone number used to send and receive messages through rather.chat. More info
Channel quality rating
Channel quality rating is Meta's signal for the health of a WhatsApp phone number. It can be affected by blocks, reports, user feedback, and message quality.
Company
A company is the organization or business entity in rather.chat. Team members, channels, templates, chats, broadcasts, and stats belong to a company.
Company invite
A company invite is an invitation linked to your email address that gives you access to an existing company workspace. If you do not have one, you may need to create a company after sign-up. More info
Company workspace
A company workspace is the area of rather.chat where a company's team members work together. Use the company selector when your account has access to more than one company.
CTA URL button
A CTA URL button is a WhatsApp button that opens a website link. When a CTA URL button is present, it replaces reply buttons or list messages for that message. More info
Customer service window
The customer service window is the 24-hour period after a user messages your business when you can send free-form replies instead of approved outbound templates. More info
Dashboard
Dashboard can mean the rather.chat application as a whole, or the Dashboard page specifically. In these docs, Dashboard with a capital D usually means the page at /dashboard.
Display name
A display name is the business name shown to customers on WhatsApp. It must meet Meta's rules and, in some cases, must already be approved before a number can be migrated. More info
Embedded signup
Embedded signup is Meta's guided connection flow used inside rather.chat to connect or migrate a WhatsApp Business Account. More info
Engagement
Engagement is a broadcast type used when a broadcast should trigger a bot or interactive follow-up flow instead of only sending a static template.
External ID
An external ID is the identifier from an external system, such as a WhatsApp phone number ID or recipient phone number. In broadcast files, external_id identifies the recipient.
Labeled text fallback
Labeled text fallback is the plain-text option format used when WhatsApp reply buttons or list messages do not fit the message limits. More info
List message
A list message is a WhatsApp interactive message that lets a user choose from a list of options. It is used when there are more options than reply buttons can support. More info
Marketing template
A marketing template is a WhatsApp template used for promotions, announcements, offers, campaigns, and other business-initiated marketing messages.
Messaging limit
A messaging limit is the number of unique customers a WhatsApp Business Account can message outside the customer service window in a rolling 24-hour period. Meta controls this limit. More info
Meta Business Account
A Meta Business Account is your business identity in Meta, used to manage assets such as WhatsApp Business Accounts, phone numbers, and billing settings. More info
Migration
Migration is the process of moving an existing WhatsApp business phone number from another provider into rather.chat without changing the number itself. More info
Official Business Account
An Official Business Account is a WhatsApp business account that has been granted official status by Meta. If a migrated number already has this status, it is preserved during migration. More info
Pause or unpause bot
Pause bot means temporarily stopping automation in a chat so an agent can reply manually. Unpause bot resumes automation after the manual interaction is complete. More info
Quick reply
A quick reply is a saved response that agents can reuse to answer common questions more quickly. More info
Reply button
A reply button is a short WhatsApp button the user taps to send a predefined response. More info
Tag
A tag is a label added to a chat so conversations can be classified, filtered, and found more easily later. More info
Team member
A team member is a person who has access to a company workspace. Admins add team members by sending invites from the Team page.
Template
A template is a pre-approved WhatsApp message format reviewed by Meta before it can be used for outbound messaging. Templates are required when sending proactive messages outside the active customer service window. More info
Two-step verification
Two-step verification is an extra security code set on a WhatsApp business phone number. It must be turned off before that number can be migrated to rather.chat. More info
Utility template
A utility template is a WhatsApp template used for transactional or operational updates such as reminders, confirmations, alerts, and account updates.
Variable
A variable is a placeholder inside a template, such as 1, that is replaced with recipient-specific content when the message is sent.
Virtual number
A virtual number is a phone number provisioned for you during the WhatsApp connection process if you do not already have a number to use. More info
WhatsApp Business Account
A WhatsApp Business Account is the business identity connected to your phone number and managed through Meta. It is required to use WhatsApp messaging features such as chats, templates, and broadcasts through rather.chat. More info
WhatsApp Cloud API
WhatsApp Cloud API is Meta's hosted WhatsApp messaging infrastructure. Migrated phone numbers are registered for use on Cloud API. More info
WhatsApp Manager
WhatsApp Manager is Meta's management area where you can view WhatsApp business assets, manage phone numbers, and update settings such as two-step verification. More info
